There are several factors which may contribute to a vitamin D deficiency: Lack of sun exposure to naturally produce vitamin D (use of sunscreen or indoor jobs, environmental pollution) Advanced age, as the ability to naturally synthesize vitamin D decreases Fat absorption disorders such as celiac disease or Crohns disease Melanated skin tones, which decreases the ability to naturally absorb UV rays to produce vitamin D Allergy or intolerance to foods rich in Vitamin D (dairy products and fatty fish) If unable to achieve the recommended daily allowance of vitamin D (600 to 800 international units (IU) for adults) with lifestyle or diet modification alone, you may consider supplementation, which can be taken in pill form or given as an injection
